One Day Off in Hong Kong, Four in Macau: Timing Your Autumn Crossing

Ask a Hong Kong crosser which night of the National Day run will be the quiet one and most will say the same thing: Friday 2 October. Hong Kong is back at work by then, the long weekend has broken up, the roads should empty out. It is a reasonable guess, and it is wrong — because Macau will still be on holiday that day, and so will the mainland. The two calendars simply do not line up this autumn, and a Macau sauna night booked on the assumption that they do is a night booked against the crowd rather than around it. This piece lays the three calendars side by side and works out, date by date, which nights are genuinely easy for someone crossing from Hong Kong.

Where the two calendars part company

Hong Kong’s autumn is short and tidy: the day after Mid-Autumn Festival, Saturday 26 September, is a general holiday, and National Day, Thursday 1 October, is a holiday. That is the whole list. There is no 2 October in Hong Kong.

Macau’s is shaped differently. The 25th — Mid-Autumn Festival itself — is not a Macau public holiday; the 26th is. And Macau observes both 1 and 2 October, which with the weekend behind them produces an unbroken four-day stretch from Thursday the 1st through Sunday the 4th. Meanwhile the mainland runs two separate holiday blocks rather than one continuous golden week — 25 to 27 September, then 1 to 7 October — with Sunday 20 September designated a makeup workday ahead of both blocks.

The nights, ranked for a Hong Kong crosser

Easiest: Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 September. These two workdays fall in the gap between the mainland’s two holiday blocks, with Macau not yet into its own. All three calendars are at work. Room grades are open, drivers are unhurried, and you are choosing from the full board rather than from what is left. If your only requirement is a good night with room to move, cross here.

Also comfortable: from Monday 6 October onward. Macau is back at work, and although the mainland block runs to the 7th, the Macau end of the equation has normalised.

Atmospheric and worth booking early: Thursday 1 October and Sunday 4 October. Both are fireworks nights, both fall inside Macau’s four-day run, and the city is at full volume. Go for the occasion, but settle the date well ahead.

Treat as a peak night, not a quiet one: Friday 2 October. Hong Kong demand does drop away. Macau and mainland demand does not — the holiday still has three days to run on that side. The city stays full; only the accents change.

Busy by definition: Saturday 26 September. Both Hong Kong and Macau are on holiday, and the mainland is mid-block.

Fireworks: five nights, two shows each

The 2026 Macau International Fireworks Display Contest is scheduled across five evenings — 12, 19 and 25 September, then 1 and 4 October — with two displays each night, at 21:00 and 21:40, over the water in front of the Macau Tower. Worth knowing: the Macao Government Tourism Office still lists this schedule as tentative, so reconfirm against their latest notice before you fix a date around it.

The sequencing that works best is straightforward. Cross in the late afternoon, watch the 21:40 display from the Tower area, and have the car take you straight from there to the club — the rest of the night runs indoors, with no second decision to make. Both the peninsula and the Cotai side absorb that timing comfortably; tell the King where you plan to watch from and the pickup is arranged around it.

A border change in your favour

One development lands right before this run. Per the Macao SAR Government Information Bureau press release No. 406728, from 18 August 2026 Hong Kong permanent residents holding a Home Return Permit can use the automated lanes bi-directionally at the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, Hengqin and Qingmao checkpoints. The Border Gate checkpoint is not part of this arrangement. Since the bridge is the default route for most Hong Kong guests, this is the group it helps most — and on a holiday weekend, a predictable clearance time is worth more than usual.

Eight clubs, read against your landing time

The single fact that decides your shortlist is what time you get through the checkpoint. Here is the regular pattern as of August 2026:

Landing in the afternoon. As of August 2026, The Excellent Sauna opens at noon — the earliest door in Macau — and closes at 04:00; it is not, and has never been, a 24-hour house. Manhao and Majesty both start their attendant shifts at 14:00 as of August 2026, so an afternoon arrival meets a full line-up either side of the bridge.

Landing after midnight. As of August 2026, Empire runs attendant shifts from 14:00 through 06:00 and Shang Pin from 15:00 through 06:00, which is what rescues a 1 October departure that could not leave Hong Kong before eleven. Number Nine and East Castle run 15:00 to 06:00 as of August 2026 — comfortably wide enough for anyone arriving after the fireworks clear.

Planning to sleep there. Five of the eight keep you until morning as of August 2026 — Empire, Number Nine, Majesty, East Castle and Shang Pin — all of them 24-hour, all with a free recliner lounge and paid private rest rooms on top. East Castle also has a free sleep zone: a sleeping area between a private rest room and the open lounge, darker and quieter than the lounge and costing nothing extra — an area, not a lockable room. On a holiday weekend, when Macau hotel rates are at their least forgiving, that is a real line on the budget.

The three that close before dawn. As of August 2026, Manhao Spa shuts at 06:00 and does not do overnight; The Excellent Sauna runs 12:00 to 04:00; and Clube Rio is a KTV club rather than a sauna, open 19:00 to 04:00, with no overnight either. All three are excellent first halves of an evening — plenty of guests open at one and move on before closing, and the King arranges both transfers as one booking.

One distinction to carry with you: as of August 2026, a club being open 24 hours does not mean attendants are working all night. The door keeps one schedule and the desk keeps another. Book your session before the shift ends; the hours after that are for sleeping and leaving.

Service charges work five different ways

Holiday weekends are the worst time to be surprised at the till, so here is how each house bills as of August 2026:

Several read the other way round from what people expect: at The Excellent, at Majesty and now at East Castle the menu price is the price you settle, because the service charge and tourism tax are already inside it. Empire, by contrast, adds its 5% and 5% at the till.

You do not have to guess at the spend. As of August 2026 the entry tier — bath floor and changing, per guest — runs Manhao MOP 1,188, Empire MOP 1,288, The Excellent MOP 1,388, Shang Pin and Number Nine MOP 1,399, Majesty MOP 1,499 and East Castle MOP 1,728, with Clube Rio from MOP 3,888 — with room grade and package moving the total a long way inside any one club. Take those as bands, not quotes: the current menu confirmed when you book is what governs. Cash, card, WeChat Pay and Alipay are all accepted across the eight as of August 2026.

What the booking adds

As of August 2026, booking through the King drops the entrance fee and puts a free seven-seater private car at your disposal — private, never shared — for pickups and returns anywhere in Macau. On holiday dates a day’s notice helps the driver plan, but it is a recommendation and not a deadline; a same-day call still gets a car.

On add-ons: every club includes two free picks, reserved for bookings placed through this site. East Castle Spa and Majesty Spa include one each, and Clube Rio is the one exception, where the perk does not apply.

As of August 2026 the picks come from the standard list: back scrub, leg massage, head massage, foot reflexology, manicure, pedicure, hand massage and ear cleaning.

Questions we get

If Hong Kong is working on 2 October, won’t Macau be quiet? Macau is still on public holiday that day, and the mainland block runs through 7 October. The demand changes source rather than disappearing, so plan the 2nd as a peak night and lock the date early.

Mid-Autumn falls on a Friday — is Macau closed that day? Friday 25 September is Mid-Autumn Festival, but Macau’s public holiday is Saturday the 26th, not the 25th. A Friday-night crossing with a Saturday-morning return sidesteps the busiest day of that weekend neatly, and as of August 2026 the five overnight clubs make that shape easy to run.

Can we watch the fireworks and still have a full night? Yes. The second display finishes shortly after 21:40 and the car goes straight to the door from there. As of August 2026, Empire, Shang Pin, Number Nine and East Castle all run attendant shifts to 06:00, which leaves the evening wide open — just avoid the 04:00 houses if you want an unhurried night.

Does the Home Return Permit change apply everywhere? No. Press release No. 406728 covers the automated lanes at the HZMB, Hengqin and Qingmao checkpoints; the Border Gate is not included.

Setting the date

Three things carry the autumn: 2 October is a working day in Hong Kong and a holiday in Macau, so book it like a peak night; 1 and 4 October are the fireworks nights and the best atmosphere of the season; and the last days of September are the easiest window of the whole run.
